Control Issues in Embedded Control Systems

Embedded systems have, by conception, a number of features such as resource constraints, autonomy, high reliability, hard real-time constraints and lack of direct human interface. All these features determine the design options. This is even more pronounced in the case of control systems, because they should be safe reactive systems and an action is always expected from them. The main goal of this position paper is to analyze the consequences of this constrained scenario in the design of efficient control systems to operate into embedded systems and to propose algorithmic and structural solutions to overcome these limitations.

Biographical Sketch:
> Professor Pedro Albertos, Fellow of IFAC, is a full Professor since 1975, at Systems Engineering and Control Department of UPV, Spain, been Director from 1979 to 1995 and in 1998. Authored more than 300 papers, book chapters and congress communications, he is co-editor of 7 books and co-author of "Multivariable Control Systems" (Springer 2004). He is an honorary Professor at the Northwestern University, Senhyang, China, Doctor Honoris Causa at the Universities of Oulu, Finland, and Polytechnic of Bucarest (Rumania). As an Invited Professor he has delivered courses and seminars in more than 30 universities and research centers. He has been teaching courses on Advanced Control Systems, Intelligent Control Systems and Systems Theory. He has directed 17 PhD theses, being the coordinator of the PhD Program on Automatica and Industrial Informatics, which has been implemented in Spain, Mexico, Columbia and Venezuela. Involved in many national and international research projects, he currently participates in the ARTIST2 Node of Excellence on Embedded Control Systems. > He is an associated editor of Control Engineering Practice and Automatica, editor in chief of the journal Revista RIAI (Revista Iberoamericana de Automatica e Industrial Informatics), IFAC Advisor, IFAC President (1999-2002), Senior Member of IEEE, member of the Board of Governors of the Control Systems Society (1996-97) and Workshops' Chair at CDC05.
