Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) for Assisting of the Walking

Abstract:
We will review methods and systems for external activation of paretic or paralyzed sensory motor systems in humans after central nervous system injury or with a central nervous system disease. The focus of the talk is on the assistance to hemiplegic patients with surface electrodes and/or implants contributing to the minimization of the foot-drop symptom, and provision of standing and ambulation to paraplegic and incomplete tetraplegic patients. We will also review a postural controller that allows hands-free walking to patients and provides necessary control of the position of center of mass included into the training of walking. The lecture specifically addresses “must do” elements that would allow translation of the research into clinics and wider home and society use.
