SkySails Towing Kites for Ship Propulsion and Power Generation: Design, Operation and Flight Control of Tethered Industrial Scale Kites

Abstract:
First, the seminar gives an overview on the SkySails ship propulsion system by introducing the system setup and operation of large-scale towing kites at sea. Further kite design issues are briefly summarised. The second part covers the flight control of tethered kites. The focus is put on the discussion of challenges to be tackled towards an operational automatic system. Details of system modelling, estimation algorithms and controller design as well as experimental findings are presented.

Biographical Sketch:
Xaver Paulig graduated at Technical University of Munich, Germany, in 2007 as an aerospace engineer (Diploma degree). He joined the kite development department of SkySails GmbH, Hamburg, Germany, the same year. His responsibilities in the field of kite design comprise aerodynamical calculations, development of design software and planning, supervision and evaluation of kite tests. He is further involved in the development of flight strategies and system automation concepts.

Michael Erhard received the Diploma degree in physics from the University of Freiburg, Germany in 2000, and the Ph.D. degree in physics, which involved research on multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates, from the University of Hamburg, Germany, in 2004. His research interests included experiments in quantum optics, laser physics, and theoretical quantum optics. He joined SkySails GmbH, Hamburg, Germany, in 2004, as a Development Engineer, where he was deeply involved in several hardware and software designs on the sensor data acquisition system and the kite steering units. He is currently in charge of the flight control system (autopilot). His main responsibility is the development of sensor data processing and control algorithms for the flying system and evaluation of those algorithms in flight tests.
