Abstract:

In this paper we investigate to what extend simple empirical model structures are suited to represent the dynamic I/O--behavior of distillation columns for purposes of control. The approximation abilities of several simple nonlinear model structures for a specific binary high--purity distillation column are investigated. A so--called ``suitability measure'' is used as tool to identify the most appropriate model structure for this column and quantify the respective approximation abilities.
