Stabilization of an azeotropic distillation column

Bekiaris, Meski, Radu and Morari (1993) explained the existence of multiple steady-states in homogeneous ternary azeotropic distillation, based on the infinite reflux and infinite column length (infinite number of trays) case. They showed that the predictions of multiple steady-states for such infinite columns have relevant implications for columns of finite length operating at finite reflux.

The first experimental validation of the existence of this kind of multiple steady states was published by Guettinger, Dorn and Morari (1996). The experiment conducted on an industrial pilot column showed two stable steady-states for identical feed flow rate, composition and operating parameters.

In this article, experiments are described for the same ternary homogeneous system methanol--methylbutyrate--toluene. The experiment on an industrial size pilot column which show two stable and one unstable steady state. The unstable steady state could be stabilized using simple PI-control.

Furthermore, transient process measurements of the plant converging towards one of the stable steady states after the controller was switched off are presented.
