Abstract:

The usage of a training-simulator in medical education of obstetricians, gives the chance to prepare doctors for possible complications during delivery. This simulator is based on the concept of Multimodal Virtual Reality, which means that it has a haptic, a vis-ual and an acoustic interface to the user. The haptic interface consists of passive, anatomical models (phantoms), which have been extended by ac-tuators and sensors. The visualization supports the user’s comprehension by showing him the physiological processes happening inside the mother’s body. The acoustic display provides sounds from the CTG (car-diotocograph), the fetus, and the mother. The mechanics of birth as well as the biological mother/child-system with the most important bio-signals and assisting devices like a CTG are being simu-lated. With this simulator the user gets the chance to practice certain delivery methods without the presence of pa-tients. Such methods can be, e.g., the protection of per-ineum, forceps/vacuum-extraction of the fetus as well as the medication of oxytocine (increase contraction inten-sity) or analgetics (pain relief) in a realistic and time-critical environment.
