Der Joy(nt)stick: Ein neuartiges Kraft-Momenten-Eingabegerät für einen Desktop-Kniesimulator

The following paper presents a new force-torque input device. It is integrated in a multimodal simulation environment and is used to drive a virtual knee joint. The simulation environment comprises a small phantom shank which is linked to a force-torque sensor, a graphic and an acoustic display. The highly sensitive sensor was developed and purpose-built for this application. It yields forces and torques in six degrees of freedom and feeds them into a biomechanical model of a knee joint which calculates the data for the graphic and acoustic animation. The resulting movements of the knee joint are displayed at a monitor. The sound generated by the moving joint and by the virtual patient due to pain is rendered by a pair of speakers. This desktop knee joint simulator is used as a portable tool to demonstrate the functionality of the Munich Knee Joint Simulator. The input device can be used to navigate through any kind of anatomical atlas. It can improve medical education as well as the communication between physician and patient.
