For the improvement of education in orthopaedics, a simulator at which manual knee tests can be exercised is developed at the Institute of Automatic Control Engineering. To increase the degree of reality, an acoustic display was developed to represent the noises arising at a knee examination. This can be pain remarks of the patient and joint noises like cracking, crackle or springing up noises as well. The database for this fuzzy based pain model is collected from literature and in expert interviews. This pain model calculates a representative pain value that is classified. Accordingly to this class one of 35 prerecorded sound samples is represented over two loudspeakers built-in into the thigh and the head of the simulator dummy.
