Control Strategies for Walking and Grasping Neuroprostheses

Abstract:

A four channel functional electrical stimulation (FES) system using surface stimulation electrodes was developed for the improvement of the grasping and the walking function of individuals with paraplegia or tetraplegia. This article describes different control strategies that were applied for the control of grasping and walking function in combination with the four channel FES system called ETHZ-ParaCare neuroprosthesis. The ETHZ-ParaCare grasping neuroprosthesis could improve the grasping function of tetraplegic subjects with levels of lesion that ranged from C4 to C6. Push button, sliding potentiometer, discrete EMG, and analog EMG control strategies were applied depending on the patients reaching capabilities to control the grasping neuroprosthesis. The walking neuroprosthesis was developed for incomplete SCI subjects and for stroke subjects. Our focus was on the implementation of an automatic gait phase detection system that is able to distinguish walking from weight shifting during standing also for pathological gait.
