Clinical validation of a novel approach for automatic control of neuromuscular block using mivacurium

Abstract:

Several closed-loop controllers for muscle relaxation based on the T1% as controlled value have been proposed. As a measure for muscle relaxation the T1% is primarily used in the research context, in routine practice the TOF count is commonly used. To improve the applicability of closed-loop control systems, a new system for mivacurium that uses the TOF-count as the controlled variable is described. The new controller has an underlying cascade to maintain T1% at required levels and therefore stabilizes the desired TOF-count. The control system is compared to manually controlled administration of mivacurium.
