Abstract:

This document is the final report for an R&D Study funded under ESA's Innovative Triangle Initiative (ITI). Its objective was to demonstrate a concept to model product families and the applications instantiated from them. Its main achievement was the development of XFeature as a prototype product family modelling tool. A software product family is a set of applications that are built from the same pool of reusable software assets. The XFeature tool provides a GUI-based environment where users can build a model that describes the set of applications that belong to the family. This is done by defining the common features that are shared by all applications in the family and the variable features that differentiates applications within the family. The XFeature tool is built as a plug-in for the Eclipse platform. It is made available as free and open software under a GPL licence.
