A Transcutaneous Electrode Measurement System

Electrical Stimulation (ES) is a technique used to artificially contract paralysed muscles in subjects with unilateral brain or spinal cord injuries. Transcutaneous (skin surface) electrodes are often chosen because they can be easily adapted and optimised for different functional modalities and physiological changes. Measuring the current distribution and impedance of the transcutaneous electrode is important for understanding how the applied electric currents and voltages penetrate into human tissue. A new measurement system has been developed that simulates human skin at the electrode interface. The system also enables skin inhomogenities such as sweat ducts to be incorporated. Current flow through the measurement system can be used to produce current distribution maps and estimate material impedances for existing and novel electrodes. Different measurement techniques are used to characterise linear and non-linear electrode materials.
