Control of active front end converters with EMI filters

Active front end converters are AC to DC power electronic devices that interface the AC utility grid with a DC source that is consuming or producing energy in a controlled way. In order to limit electromagnetic interference (EMI) and the grid voltage deterioration that is caused by the converter switches operation, a resonant (EMI) filter is often placed between the converter and the utility grid. With renewable energies, the number of power converters that are injecting energy back into the utility grid is increasing. At the same time, the requirements in term of power quality, energetic efficiency and converter size are becoming more stringent and an improvement of control techniques for these kind of converters is required. The talk will present an overview of this application, discuss when this control problem becomes hybrid, present some control solutions and the issues that are still to be solved.
