Selective Control of Wrist and Finger Flexors for FES activated grasping

Electrical stimulation using virtual electrode arrays have been shown to improve functional grasp by enabling selective activation of the finger and wrist flexors [1]. New electrode arrays allowing simultaneous stimulation of finger flexors and wrist extensors are currently under development and their effectiveness needs to be investigated. Updated measurement systems are required to fully record the effects of finger and wrist extension and flexion. These will include new versions of the Dynamic Grasp Assessment System capable of recording flexion and extension from the finger flexors; and effects of wrist movement. Mechanical models and error analysis of the measurement systems are required to enable us to fully understand the measured results. The new measurement systems will be integrated into the updated virtual electrode environment. The control software will be updated to enable activation of two electrode arrays; positioned above the flexors and extensors.
