Abstract:

The paper focuses on hybrid cascade multilevel inverters. These inverters combine semiconductor devices of different technologies, which theoretically allows obtaining high efficiency. The bottleneck is, however, the need for isolated supplies for the cells. The paper introduces theoretical foundations for the design and control of high-resolution, high efficiency pulse-width modulated inverters with simplified DC power supplies. It introduces several design conditions for selecting the voltage ratio, for single and three-phase inverters. Classes of configurations that can be balanced actively and for which the high voltage cell needs to be switched at most at twice the fundamental frequency are obtained and analyzed. The paper investigates how to retain these properties when taking into account conversion losses and DC-voltage imbalances. It analyzes the maximum voltage utilization and efficiency of the proposed configurations. Effectiveness of the proposed concepts are extensively validated experimentally.
