I would like to thank all the wonderful people around me, without which this thesis would not have been possible. Above all, I would like to thank Dr. Abu Sebastian, for his constant support, motivation and guidance. The almost daily interactions with him, in the lab, and most importantly at lunch and during coffee breaks, ensured a fast and robust feedback mechanism on my work. It has been two years since Prof. John Lygeros first mentioned to me, about the research activities at IBM Research’s Zurich Laboratory (ZRL). I would like to thank him for all his support and guidance since then, and especially during my semester project and now for the master thesis. The weekly review meetings would not have been so effective if not for the presence of Dr. Angeliki Pantazi and Tomas Tuma. I thank them for their time and for their valuable suggestions which helped me to constantly fine-tune my work. I had the pleasure to interact and work with Dr. Hugo Rothuizen and Dr. Michel Despont, and would like to specially thank and acknowledge them for the finite element simulations and micro-cantilever design and fabrication. I would like to thank Walter Hberle, Urs Egger for their invaluable support with the AFM mechatronics.
