Conceptual Design of an Embedded Sensing and Control Platform for 1:43 Scale RC Cars

This document provides an overlook of the inertial measurement unit (IMU) used for the race cars. A deeper analysis of its components and a suggestion for an adjusted sensing platform is described. To this end the parameters of the DC motor were derived and compared to results of previous projects. Furthermore we connected a Single Board Computer (SBC), the Gumstix Overo Fire, to a host computer. A toolchain for compiling code for the SBC, both natively and remotely, was created and will be described in detail after a brief introduction to Gumstix. We analyzed and modified the IMU-code to fit our purposes, i.e. cutting out unnecessary code. This resulted in a more efficient code with which to flash the IMU. In a next step we set up a serial connection between IMU and SBC. From here the goal was to be able to flash the IMU using the SBC, instead of a desktop computer. This way the IMU-code could be changed while the race car is still driving.
