Toward Environmental Awareness For FES Grasp Assistance (Using Kinect)

The aim of this project is to explore the applicability of low cost equipment (Kinect) to train or restore missing functionalities of patients suffering motor disabilities on the upper limb. In our case this could be used for training the grasp movement by stimulation. The final result of this project is a running program. It should be mentioned that the combination of this program with FES was not part of our project, but the idea was to show the possibilities of it. The goal of this combination would be to detect the hand of a person and objects in a certain area and to automatically open and close the hand by electrical stimulation so that it can grasp an object. Hand opening and grasping is elicited by using transcutaneous electrical stimulation, providing in each case an appropriate set of currents that cause muscle contraction. After the calculation of the object size, it is known how much the hand has to be opened for grasping the object. So the hand will be stimulated until it fits to the objects' size. Once the hand is opened enough the person can move his/her hand to the object where the hand will be closed by electrical stimulation. If the object is moved to a certain area, the object will be released automatically.
