Control and simulation of a VSC-HVDC link

Power system is dependent of stable reliable control of active and reactive power to keep its integrity. As embedding VSC-HVDC to AC systems is a promising method to improve the stability of connected AC grid, it is of interest to study the characteristics of implement A VSC-HVDC model, including system model, measurement and controller model, is set up in the environment of MATLAB and SIMULINK. The classical PI control scheme of VSC-HVDC is introduced and the optimal PI control scheme for back-to-back VSCHVDC link and VSC-HVDC with DC transmission line is given by PI tuning program. PQ tracking block is developed, and VSC-HVDC model together with the PQ tracking block provide an analysis tool for studying the performance of VSC-HVDC in power system. There are three factors limiting the active and reactive power output of VSCHVDC, maximum current through the IGBTs jIACmaxj, maximum DC current through the cable jIDCmaxj and DC voltage jVDCj. The influence of the above factors to the P 􀀀Q capability chart is analyzed in case of steady state and transient situation.
