Abstract:

Every year, 190'000 people suer a stroke in Germany. Another 8000 people suer a spinal cord injury (SCI). The outcome is often physical disability, which needs to be treated with rehabilitation. An often used rehabilitation method is the weight-supported treadmill training. A modern and automated version is the Lokomat by Hocoma. Another therapy is known as functional electrical stimulation, FES. The electrical current stimulates and contracts paralysed muscles. This method is in clinical use since 1961. In the master thesis of Felix Jonasch, FES was implemented in the Lokomat to lift the foot of the patient, providing additional training. A closed-loop control rather than an open-loop control was developed. The idea of combining passive gait training with FES is what lead to this thesis.
