Abstract:

The purpose of our semester thesis was to design a drive system, which can be mounted on the kites from the Center for Synergetic Structures at the Eidgenössische Materialprü- fungs- und Forschungsanstalt (Empa). They have developed new types of kites, which are employed to generate wind energy. With our drive system, one should be able to bypass calm periods during ight. A further important requirement on the drive system is to manage the take o. Both, a mathematical model and a simulation tool have been used to estimate the required mechanical power to full the demands on the drive system. With the results from our theoretical work we were able to build up a real drive system, which was mounted on a kite. In a last step, some test ights have been carried out in order to verify the results from the calculations and the simulation.
