Abstract:

In this project the damping capabilities of shunted piezoelectric devices are investigated. On a beam and a plate system piezo patches are shunted via R- and RL-networks. The performance of an optimized network is compared to the one of an active controller. It is found that a shunted piezo can reduce the vibration in a narrow band by about 5dB which is about half as much as an active controller can do. The performance is mainly limited by the poor electro-mechanical power conversion of the piezo.
