Observability of a PDE model of aggregation of thermostatically controlled loads

Abstract:

Thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) are household appliances such as electric heaters, air conditioners and fridges. Through proper control of their aggregate power consumption, they could help in balance of supply and demand of electricity. An important step in control design is having an accurate dynamical model describing TCLs aggregate power consumption and also accurate estimate of the state of this model. The objective of this project is to study observability of one such proposed dynamical model. In particular, we use the Fokker-Planck partial differential equation (FP-PDE) model describing the aggregate state of homogenous set of TCLs. We then explore observability conditions for infinite dimensional linear systems to the problem at hand. We discuss one such observability condition based on the properties of the eigenfunctions of this FP-PDE. Although deriving theoretical guarantees based on the eigenfunctions was difficult, we provide numerical analysis and discuss next steps to address the challenges.
