The adequacy of an empirical model of nonlinear process dynamics depends on the model structure chosen, the parameter estimation procedure employed, and the input sequences used to excite the process. This paper considers four design parameters for input sequences: sequence length, range of variation, distribution of values over this range, and ``shape'' (e.g., frequency content). Emphasis is placed on the last two of these parameters because they are the least constrained by practical considerations. The influences of these parameters are compared in a brief case study.
