Abstract:

In this paper, the stability and dynamic behavior of homogeneous azeotropic distillation columns is studied with two novel tools that are based on a qualitative and a numerical approach, respectively. Both methods analyze the dynamic behavior of column profiles after perturbations. The advantage of the proposed approaches is that they provide insight without detailed column simulations. In addition, they allow more general conclusions as they are not restricted to specific sets of operating conditions. The key concept of the qualitative analysis is to study the interaction of changes in the total column holdup and the shape of the column profile. In the numerical approach, changes in the total column holdup are compared with the global mass balance to derive a vector field representing trajectories of the product compositions.
