Project context

In application such as electric motor drives, the power is drawn from the grid through an AC-DC converter. When a unity power factor is required, an inverter can be used as front-end (the converter part that is connected to the grid). An EMI filter (Electro-Magnetic Interference) is then placed between the converter and the utility grid in order to remove the current ripple and the voltage conducted interference from the inverter signals.

The growing importance of the power quality and electromagnetic compatibility in power converter design, the reduction of the size and weight of the converters and the increased demand for high-performance raise new problems in the effective control of such systems. The stabilization of the EMI filter, which is a resonant system, together with the design of a high-bandwidth controller is currently a quite challenging topic.

Project goal
  • Design of an effective controller that takes into account in the dynamic of the EMI filter
(the converter model is already available)
  • Test of the system by simulation
  • Implementation and test with an experimental setup (optional)
