ETH Zurich Walking and Grasping Neuroprostheses

Two functional electrical stimulation systems, with surface electrodes and four stimulation channels, were developed. One of these two systems is used for rapid prototyping of neuroprostheses, and the other system is used as a neuroprosthesis in daily living activities. These two stimulators allowed us to develop walking and grasping neuroprostheses. The grasping neuroprosthesis is used to restore palmar and lateral grasps in C5 and C6 complete spinal cord injured subjects. The main feature of the proposed grasping neuroprosthesis is that it is EMG controlled. The walking neuroprosthesis is used to eliminate the 'drop foot' problem in incomplete spinal cord injured subjects and stroke subjects. The unique feature of the proposed prosthesis is an intelligent gait sensor that detects four principal gait phases during walking: mid stance, heel off, swing phase and heel strike.

Biographical Sketch:
Milos R. Popovic has received the Diploma degree in Electrical Engineering in 1990 from the University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1996 from the University of Toronto, Canada. He worked as a research engineer at Robotics and Automation Laboratory, Canada, and as a systems engineer at Allied Signal Aerospace, Canada. Currently he is a research assistant at the Automatic Control Laboratory at the at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, Switzerland, where he manages the FES project. His fields of expertise are: robotics and automation, power system engineering, friction modeling and control, reliability engineering and signal processing. Presently he is developing skills in the field of rehabilitation engineering. In 1997 he was awarded the Technology Transfer Award - 1st price, by the Swiss National Science Foundation, for the FES project he is currently managing.
