Internet: the next millenium Tomorrow: Challenges to a Winner

The Internet is evolving into an ubiquitous infrastructure, bringing network services to the general public. Such a scope is well beyond the Internet's original profile, which was aimed at a well-confined and specific community. This corresponds to a challenge to the Internet and its development. The presentation will discuss some specific aspects, where the original concepts may need to adapt to the requirements of this grown environment. For instance, what will be the impact on the Internet if an ever increasing volume of commercial transactions will use the network, which are primarily driven by considerations of profit and competitiveness? This kind of issue, overlapping technical and organisational aspects, will be addressed.
