Biographical Sketch:
Robert Lucky is Corporate Vice President, Applied Research, at Bellcore. Prior to assuming this position in 1992, he was the Executive Director of the Communications Sciences Research Division at AT&T Bell Laboratories. In his professional associations he has been president of the Communications Society, executive vice president of the IEEE, editor of the Proceedings of the IEEE, and chairman of the scientific advisory board of the US Air Force. Since 1982 he has written the bi-monthly Reflections column of personal observations in IEEE Spectrum Magazine. He is the author of Silicon Dreams, Lucky Strikes Again, and the co-author of Principles of Data Communication. His PhD in electrical engineering is from Purdue University, and he has received honorary doctorates from Purdue and NJIT. He is a fellow of the IEEE, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Among the awards he has received are the IEEE Edison Medal, the Marconi Prize, and the Exceptional Civilian Contributions Medal of the US Air Force.
