A Functional Approach to Fault Tolerant Control Architectures for Distributed Systems

Abstract:
Fault Tolerant Control systems are used to automatically monitor and reconfigure a system possibly subject to faults with the aim of preventing the consequences of fault propagation and let it achieve again its main functionality. On the other hand functional analysis is used to find out the functions/functionalities that the system must accomplish. This is quite useful in fault tolerance, because it let us define which functionality is affected by a fault and then use modularity to detect the fault and reconfigure the failed functionality. This talk focuses on the application of functional analysis to distributed systems, i.e. those systems consisting of sets of nodes interconnected through a communication network to achieve a global functionality. A procedure to objectively design a modular and hierarchical architecture for distributed systems is presented. The procedure takes advantage from properties of composability and scalability of distributed systems for what concerns functional analysis and from the important property of dependability of distributed systems through which it is possible to detect error containment regions and achieve fault tolerance.
An application to a real plant will be presented at the end of the talk. The most part of this work has been pursued in the framework of the European project IFATIS (Intelligent Fault Tolerant Control for Integrated Systems). Finally some current and future evolutions of these works will be outlined.

Biographical Sketch:
Marta Capiluppi took her laurea degree in Computer Science Engineering with specialization in Automatics and Industrial Automation System at the Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna in July 2003. In November 2003 she passed the selection for open PhD position at the University of Bologna obtaining one of the three national fellowships for the PhD in Automatics and Operational Research. From January 2004 she is, then, PhD student at the Department of Electronics, Computer Science and Systems (DEIS) of the University of Bologna and a member of the research center for Complex Automated Systems (CASY). Her research interests are actually focused on fault tolerant systems, with particular attention to functional and structural aspects of distributed systems to find modelling tools and supervision architectures.
