Control of driveability in hybrid-electric vehicles

Abstract:
Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) provide an attractive solution by utilizing an electrical energy buffer that assists the engine by improving the overall efficiency of the system, allowing for advanced controls that help reduce pollutant emissions and create a potential for improved driveline control. An important aspect of control, particularly for consumer acceptability, is assuring good vehicle drivability. The subject of HEV drivability has not been covered as exhaustively as the energy management aspects of HEV in the open literature. The first part of this presentation describes the derivation and validation of a control-oriented drivability model for a HEV. The second part of the presentation presents initial results of the development of an approach for the hybrid control of a class of switched dynamical systems.

Biographical Sketch:
Giorgio Rizzoni, the Ford Motor Company Chair in ElectroMechanical Systems, is a Professor at The Ohio State University. He received Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1986. Since 1999 he has been the director of the OSU Center for Automotive Research. Dr. Rizzoni's research interests are in system dynamics, measurements, control, and fault diagnosis with application to automotive systems. Prof. Rizzoni is a Fellow of IEEE (2004), a Fellow of SAE (2005), a recipient of the 1991 National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award, and of several other technical and teaching awards.
