Integrated tools for system modeling, simulation, control, and optimization

Abstract:
The GIMSCOP research activities aim at the development of practical methodologies to improve process operations and design. The distinguishing feature of this approach is to treat modeling, optimization and control in a unified framework, exploting their sinergism to stablish better understanding and control of process operations. In this talk, the main activities of the GIMSCOP research grupo will be presented, emphazising the development of an equation-oriented dynamic simulator and optimizer (EMSO, http://www.enq.ufrgs.br/alsoc).

Biographical Sketch:
Argimiro Resende Secchi, is an Associate Professor at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil. He received Ph.D. from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in collaboration with Caltech Institute of Technology in 1992. His PhD thesis “The Waveform Relaxation Method for the Concurrent Dynamic Process Simulation” was co-advised by the Professors Evaristo C. Biscaia Jr. and Manfred Morari. Since 1993 he has been teaching and researching at UFRGS as head of the Simulation and Optimization Lab. His major fields of interest are: Process Modeling and Simulation; Process Control and Optimization; Numerical methods for dynamic simulation and optimization; and Real-time monitoring and optimization.
