Crane Scheduling and Manufacturing Plant Simulation

Abstract:
The speaker's main research interests, crane scheduling and manufacturing plant simulation, will be presented. Cranes serve requests of moving heavy items from/to locations constrained by physical and time-based requirements. The crane scheduling problem consists in assigning requests to cranes optimizing a general control target. Two models of crane movements and constraints will be presented: one based on hybrid system formalism and another one on Petri Nets formalism. The scheduling problem is formulated using both models. A manufacturing system simulator has been developed by the Group for Research on Automatic Control Engineering (G.R.A.C.E.) of Universita' del Sannio, in collaboration with "Centro Sviluppo Materiali" (C.S.M.), Rome, Italy. An overview on the UML model and two applications to different industries are given.

Biographical Sketch:
Alessandra Parisio graduated in Computer Science Engineering from Universitą degli Studi del Sannio in September 2005. Her thesis work has regarded the development of a simulator for the production process in a steel plant. The simulation software is implemented using Delphi, an object-oriented programming language. The simulator can help to evaluate the efficacy of different production strategies. At the present time, she is working as Ph.D. student in Automatic Control Engineering at the Universitą degli Studi del Sannio. Her current research interests are manufacturing systems simulation and scheduling.
