Vision-based perception of (Aerial) Robots

Abstract:
Promising great impact in the way we employ/consider robots today, the development of Computer Vision techniques for Robotics has been a hot research topic for some time now, lately attracting the interest from top players in industry, such as Google and Amazon. This talk will describe the journey of the evolution of Vision for Robotics as I have experienced it, all the way from the very first system estimating the motion and the surroundings of a handheld camera on a laptop, to the employment of such vision-based techniques onboard a small aircraft and a discussion of some of the most challenging problems we are faced with at present, describing ongoing wok and research directions for the Vision for Robotics Lab (http://www.v4rl.ethz.ch).

Biographical Sketch:
Margarita Chli holds a Swiss National Foundation Professorship, leading the Vision for Robotics Lab at ETH Zurich and is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Edinburgh, UK. Margarita completed her BA and MEng in Information and Computer engineering at the University of Cambridge, UK, before going on to conduct her PhD in “Applying Information Theory to Efficient SLAM” under the supervision of Prof. Andrew Davison at Imperial College London. In 2010 she joined the Autonomous Systems Lab of ETH Zurich as a Senior Researcher, Lecturer and Deputy Director, while in 2013 she became a Lecturer and Chancellor’s Fellow at the School of Informatics of the University of Edinburgh. Margarita’s research interests lie in studying Computer Vision techniques to develop perception for robotic systems and small unmanned aircraft, in particular.
