From Zurich Airport
Please make sure that you already have Swiss francs if you know you are arriving after 22:00 local time.
By Taxi
The easiest and most comfortable way to the Automatic Control Laboratory is by taxi. Ask the driver to take you to the Physikstrasse 3 in Zurich. This will cost you about CHF 40.- (taxis are fairly expensive in Zurich).
By Train
The least expensive way, costing about CHF 6.- is by train to Zurich main railway station. Trains leave every 15 to 20 minutes and take about 10 minutes. At the airport follow the signs to the underground train station. Please make sure that you have a valid ticket before taking the last stairs down to the platforms. Tickets can be bought at the ticket shop (the person at the shop speaks english) or at the ticketing machine.
From Zurich Railway Station
By Taxi
The easiest and most comfortable way to the Automatic Control Laboratory is by taxi. Ask the driver to take you to the Physikstrasse 3. This will cost you about CHF 15.- (taxis are fairly expensive in Zurich).
By Tram
Follow the signs at the railway station to the tram on Bahnhofstrasse. Tram No 6 / Zoo / will take you to Voltastrasse (5 stops). Please make sure that you have a valid ticket. They can be obtained at the ticketing machine. After leaving the tram at Voltastrasse walk back some steps to the main entrance of the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (building ETZ). Take the elevator to floor J, and follow the signs for the bridge to the ETL. Take the stairs or elevator up one flight to our secretariat. The entrances of ETZ and ETL are opened from 07:00 to 19:00h.
Ticketing Machine
To use the ticketing machine you need swiss coins and/or CHF 20.- banknotes.
Use the machine as follows :
- From Zurich airport (ZRH): Enter the code 8000 (for Zurich)
From Zurich main station: Press the yellow button labeled Kurzstrecke. - The display shows the price for a 2nd class single-way ticket.
To switch between 1st and 2nd class by pressing the 1.KL. button. This is only important if you intend to use the train, there is no difference between first and second class for the trams.
To switch between single-way to two-way ticket using the <-> button. A two-way ticket for trams is valid for 24 hours and therefore called a Tageskarte. The price for a onw-way ticket is SFr. 2.10, the one for the Tageskarte SFr. 7.20. - Insert the money, the machine will drop the ticket and if necessary the change in the slot in the left corner.
Tickets are valid for the whole public transport network between the zone(s) encompassing the origin and the destination place. Single-way tickets are valid for two hours and two-way tickets are valid for 24 hours. Therefore, you will not need to buy an additional ticket if you bought a train ticket (code 8000) at Zurich Airport and are going directly to the Automatic Control Laboratory. The train ticket is also valid for the trams.
