Additional information

Adolf Hermann Glattfelder was Professor -Titularprofessor- starting his work at the Automatic Control Lab at ETH Zurich in 1991. He retired in 2005.

Adolf Hermann Glattfelder was born on June 15, 1940. He studied mechanical engineering at ETH Zuerich from 1960 to 1964 and obtained his diploma degree there in 1964. He started his professional career working with Brown Boveri Cie, Baden. Since 1965 doing research with Prof. Dr. Paul Profos, he obtained his Ph.D degree in 1969 and his "Habilitation" in 1973 for teaching "design of advanced control systems". He has been teaching in this field at ETH Zuerich since then as a part time lecturer.

In 1976 he continued his professional career in industry, with Sulzer Escher Wyss, Zuerich, as R&D manager and also as responsible for automatic control systems of hydroelectric plants (Ober-Ingenieur, 1977), and then with Sulzer Corporate Research (Vize-Direktor, 1985).

At the Automatic Control Lab, together with Prof. Schaufelberger, he was responsible for the core course in "Linear Control Systems" from 1992 to 1996. His research and teaching activities were in the field of application oriented control system design, and especially in "modelling for control" and in "control systems with saturations and overrides".

He was leading a research group of Ph.D students in "control of biomedical systems", and had continuous contacts with industry for design of control systems for mechanical, hydraulic and thermal systems. He chaired the Educations Committee of the Electrical Engineering Department at ETH Zuerich in 1995/1996. He was president of the Swiss Society for Automatic Control.
