Additional information

Manfred Morari was appointed Professor at the ETH Zurich and head of the Automatic Control Laboratory in the Department of Electrical Engineering in 1994.

Prof. Morari was born in Graz, Austria. He earned a Diploma in chemical engineering from the ETH Zurich. Upon completing his doctorate (Ph.D. in chemical engineering) at the University of Minnesota, he was a professor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In 1983, Prof. Morari joined the Chemical Engineering Department at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). During his 11 year-tenure at Caltech he was named Ross McCollum-William H. Corcoran Professor, headed the Department of Chemical Engineering as Executive Officer, and founded the Department of Control and Dynamical Systems.

Prof. Morari's research focuses on the development of methods for the analysis and design of control systems for switched dynamical systems ("hybrid systems") and their application to problems in the automotive, power electronics, and biomedical domains. He is also directing research projects on active vibration control, automation in anesthesia and the control of biochemical separation units.

Prof.Morari's research is internationally recognized. The analysis techniques and software developed in his group are used in universities and industry throughout the world. He has received numerous awards, including the Eckman Award from the American Automatic Control Council, the Colburn Award and the Professional Progress Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the McGraw Research Award from the American Society for Engineering Education. In 1993 Prof. Morari was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He is included in the list of the most highly cited researchers in engineering by ISIHighlyCited.com. In 2005 Prof. Morari was named Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and received the IEEE Control Systems Field Award, the highest award of the IEEE in the control field.
